For the Generations

The shoreline of Okanagan Lake isn’t ever still. Sand shifts, spring runoff alters currents, and storms redraw the beach. Any construction along the lake must work within that reality.

Aqua Waterfront Village is made up of three condo towers, ground floor retail, and indoor boat storage facility. Building here came with an obligation to shape the shoreline in a way that reduces the need for ongoing intervention and allow the lake to continue its natural rhythms.

The approach begins with the land itself. Native vegetation is being reintroduced to stabilize the soil and restore a more resilient shoreline. The beach profile has been carefully reshaped, so incoming wave energy drive away naturally rather than grinding down the bank. A single groyne will extend into the lake, slowing the movement of sediment and reducing the need for repeated beach maintenance and replenishment over time.

Along the lake’s edge, a public beach and boardwalk will trace the shoreline, offering locals and visitors a place to experience the lake and reconnect with a landscape that has always drawn people.

Boating is handled differently here too. Rather than a traditional marina with vessels permanently moored in the water, boats are stored on land in a dry-rack facility and launched only when in use, keeping more of the nearshore environment open and reducing the long0term footprint on the lake.

The work along this stretch of waterfront has been carried out with care and with a long view in mind. Shorelines shift over decades and centuries. The goal here has simply been to do what is necessary, step back where possible, and leave behind a shoreline that locals and visitors can enjoy for generations to come, long after the work itself has faded into the background.
