Water doesn’t take no for an answer. It moves with quiet persistence, tracing its own path through the flow of time. Unchecked, it carves out caverns and valleys, softening hard edges and uncovering beauty as superfluous material is eroded away.
Just like its namesake, Aqua Waterfront Village is the result of exactly this kind of journey.
A vision shaped by time.
When plans first unfolded to build a signature community on the edge of Okanagan Lake all the way back in 2007, time had other ideas. The global economic context of 2008 put preliminary design work on hold for several years — and though updated concepts were dreamt up and floated around in the decade or so afterwards, none of these iterations felt as though they befit the remarkable location upon which the community was destined to sit.
As with water, the idea of Aqua reshaped itself over time — carving its own path, eroding away the excess, and shaping rough edges into something truly beautiful. Ultimately, the story of this project’s evolution and persistent journey towards its completion is told in the most honest way we know how: through the architecture itself.
Where form follows water’s flow.
Gazing towards land from the lake, the three towers of this community appear to cascade gently toward the shoreline like water flowing downhill. This graceful waterfall effect doesn’t demand your attention — instead, it subtly draws you in, rippling with a rhythm all its own.
Even the most unexpected details of Aqua’s design arose from this story of water and time. The gentle curvature of railings echo the bend of the lakeshore, while nautical-inspired metallics mark aspects of the interior design. A cutaway window in the community’s cornerstone — Aqua Boat Club — highlights the boats lovingly nestled within its walls. Water bubbles playfully from fountains, and shapes inspired by a river’s bend accent the pathways underfoot.
What Aqua was aways meant to become.
From the podium to its uppermost peak, Aqua Waterfront Village is layered with character; infused with special, hidden details that tell the story of its development and refinement. Gifted with the luxury of time, these nuances ultimately wove their way into Aqua’s final design as it ultimately became a love letter to the water each of us in this region loves best — Okanagan Lake.
That’s the power of inspiration — it can begin anywhere. In a shoreline. In a stream. In a story that takes its time to unfold. At Aqua, it all flowed together to shape a place that feels inevitable, as though it could only ever have become what it is today.
